Sonomuse audioguide. The infrared headset.
Sonomuse is the trademark of an audioguide sound system developed by Binette & Associés Ltée of Montréal, Québec, Canada. This infrared communication technology was pioneered by Koss Stereophones and then adapted to meet the the complex information needs of museums and large exhibitions.
When planning an exhibition, artistic directors are often concerned with providing a recorded guide, or using music and special effects to create an atmosphere. The public, familiar with advanced audiovisual technology, has come to expect a richness of information. However, conventional installations run the risk of spillover sound. Also, a public sound system endlessly repeating a prerecorded commentary can quickly wear on the nerves of visitors, guides and security personnel, creating irritation and boredom.
Sonomuse changes all this by making it possible to communicate discretely and directly to every visitor with a gamut of information, including stereo music and sound effects. The key : a comfortable, adjustable headset wich allows the visitor to wander from one exhibit to the other, completely at ease.
Thanks to infrared technology, local sound areas can be clearly defined with no danger of cross-interference. The commentary always matches the zone, and unlike conventional audioguides, our system allows visitors to follow their noses... instead of being led by the nose! The visitor no longer has to move in lockstep fashion through a dictated program while fiddling with equipment that may have gotten out of sync. There are no buttons to push, and the program is always right on target.
Sonomuse makes quality sound a part of the entertainment. The visitor simply dons a headset and adjust the sound level to his or her convenience. Infrared technology does the rest. One standard headset can deliver two languages or soundtracks, meaning that you can offer choice without having to invest in extra equipment. Sonomuse allows exhibition planners to create a total, information-rich environment. The programs play simultaneously without any risk of disturbance.
